ISMDN joins GREENMEDPORTS to connect port decarbonisation with fuel safety
ISMDN presented at the GREENMEDPORTS technical coordination meeting on 14 October, invited by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, a partner in both consortia. Three routes for collaboration were proposed across the Mediterranean green ports network.
ISMDN took part in the technical coordination meeting of GREENMEDPORTS on 14 October 2026, presenting the network in the meeting's project-synergies session at the invitation of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport.
GREENMEDPORTS, the Green Ports Cluster for a Sustainable Mediterranean Maritime and Transport Ecosystem, is funded under Interreg NEXT MED and runs from June 2025 to June 2028. It is led by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority in Italy and brings together partners in seven countries, among them the Arab Academy in Egypt, the University of Science and Technology of Oran in Algeria, the CETMO Foundation in Spain, the Foundation for Transport in Malta, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority in Jordan, and the Tunisian Directorate General of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Its outputs include six Local Green Port Hubs, a shared Carbon Footprint Platform and a Green Label Port certification.
The Arab Academy is a partner in both consortia, and Prof. Kareem Tonbol, Dean of Scientific Research for Maritime Affairs, invited ISMDN to present. Yaser Farag of the University of Strathclyde presented the network's purpose, its four themes, and the evidence it has gathered so far from experts, ISMDN regional workshops, and analysis of the EU hydrogen incident database (HIAD).
ISMDN is funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation and led by the University of Strathclyde, with nine partner institutions across eight countries. Organisations wishing to join the network can register at ismdn.org/register.
