ISMDN at the 5th MASTIC Conference in Bali

The International Safer Maritime Decarbonisation Network (ISMDN) was represented at the 5th Maritime Safety International Conference (MASTIC 2026), held from 22 to 24 July 2026 at Hotel Kuta Bali Paradiso in Bali, Indonesia. The engagement was led by our partners at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Prof. I Made Ariana and Dr Eng Dhimas Widhi Handani.

Two of the conference workshops sat directly on ISMDN's themes. Workshop I, Smart Navigation for Ship Traffic Safety, examined navigation systems and protocols for high-traffic zones, moderated by Dr Eng Dhimas Widhi Handani with Prof. Furukawa Yoshitaka of Kyushu University and Prof. Lydia Helena Wong of Nanyang Technological University. Workshop II, Abandonment and Site Restoration of Upstream Oil and Gas Facilities, addressed the technical, environmental and regulatory demands of decommissioning, drawing on expertise from SKK Migas and Institut Teknologi Bandung.

Participants spanned operators, regulators, industry and academia. State-owned and private enterprises included PT Pertamina, PT Samudera Indonesia and Petrokimia Gresik. Regulatory and government bodies included SKK Migas, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and regional government. National shipyards and classification bureaus were represented, among them PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia. More than twenty Indonesian universities and polytechnics attended, alongside Kobe University, Kyushu University, Nanyang Technological University, Hochschule Wismar and Guangzhou University. The keynote addresses were given by Dr Ir. I Wayan Koster, Governor of Bali, and Prof. I Ketut Adnyana of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.

In a side event, ITS donated Automatic Identification System software, known locally as "GPS Laut", to the Klungkung Regency government. The system will be used to monitor vessel safety, protect the marine ecosystems around Nusa Penida, and measure carbon emissions. ITS was represented by Prof. Dr Ketut Buda Artana, Prof. I Made Ariana, Prof. Eko Budi Djatmiko and Dr-Ing Setyo Nugroho.

MASTIC 2026 connected university expertise with operators, regulators and policymakers, and the evidence gathered there feeds the Safer Maritime Decarbonisation Roadmap.
