UMT and the Marine Department of Malaysia discuss decarbonisation governance

On 18 June 2026, the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu research team met representatives of the Marine Department of Malaysia at UMT to exchange perspectives on maritime decarbonisation. The Marine Department was represented by Mr Norjipin Saidi, Director of Safety, Security and Marine Environment, and Mr Mohd Tarmizi Osman, Assistant Director.

Discussion covered alternative fuels and fuel transition pathways, energy efficiency measures for ships and ports, port decarbonisation strategies and infrastructure, international and national regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, the maritime safety considerations associated with low and zero carbon technologies, and maritime governance with particular attention to regional implementation, Flag State responsibilities and Port State Control.

Both parties identified opportunities for collaboration, including joint research projects, policy studies, academic publications, technical workshops and knowledge sharing programmes. The engagement supports the integration of research findings into evidence-based policy and strengthens the regulatory perspective within the ISMDN evidence base.
