ISMDN partner UMT examines port decarbonisation at Penang Port

A study visit to the Penang Port Commission gathered first-hand evidence on hybrid cranes, renewable energy integration and ship waste management in a working Malaysian port.
On 18 June 2026, the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) research team conducted a study visit to the Penang Port Commission as part of ISMDN stakeholder engagement. The team was received by Madam Maryati Ramli, Senior Corporate Manager, who briefed the visit on port operational management, sustainability initiatives and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining operational efficiency.
Several initiatives were examined. Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. has deployed hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and the integration of battery pack technology into crane operations has improved energy efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. The port has committed capital investment to renewable energy, including proposed large-scale floating solar photovoltaic systems to supply clean electricity for port operations. A standard operating procedure for the management of ship-generated waste has been introduced to support compliance with national and international environmental requirements.
Penang Port has been recognised under the APEC Port Services Network Green Port Award System for its integrated sustainability and environmental management.
The visit provided practical insight into how decarbonisation strategies are implemented in a working port environment, covering infrastructure investment, renewable energy integration, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance and stakeholder collaboration. The findings contribute case study material to the ISMDN evidence base on port decarbonisation.
